random musings because i have a few moments to spare

Posted on Saturday 6 August 2005

hi kids,

yeah, so given my last post, you all (all 0.0001 of you) can guess that i’ve been away from my desk for a looong time. livin’ large, flyin’ in my jet, checkin’ in with my homies on the coasts–whatever. that’s all fiction, but i have been away from here doing stuff. i’ve got a few moments and an internet connection, so here are some recent, ongoing and upcoming events from my datebook (tenses be damned):

watched the cinema premiere of an old chum, ES. (look for it at your favorite video stores any time now.) he had a wonderful party planned for it at his home, replete with stadium seating, digital projector and real movie food. he’s lucky to have such a longsuffering wife.

chatting with a new buddy D(g), and becoming as giddy as a schoolgirl.

finally wrote back to EK after two months and A(A)S after a month. no answer from EK so far. i probably said too much, but it had to be said. A(A)S wrote back immediately–extra points for her. i should keep in better touch with my friends, but procrastination always has the better of me. i still haven’t heard personally from good ole RV. i miss him, though it’s probably my fault we’re out of touch.

planning to attend the wedding of old classmate AJ at which i’ll be an usher. funny thing is, i’ll be seeing people i’m friends with and related to, but haven’t seen in a long time, even though some of them live in the same small town i do! crazy.

immediately following the wedding, i’ll be attending my 10 year high school reunion, some 2 hours from the location of the wedding. talk about a busy day. still trying to persuade best buddy MB into coming. i think she’s 85% onboard.

babysat for my young nephew J(g) for a couple of days. too cute for words; way too rambunctious for his own good. adorable nonetheless.

(btw, his sidewalk chalk caricature, for which he would only draw the ear-to-ear smile and pose á la crime-scene outline, looks like a cross between cartoon characters “ed” from ed, edd, ‘n’ eddy and “ike” or any other canadian from south park.

here’s a photo, softened a bit by the rains:
J(g)'s portrait as a canadian crime scene

watched charlie and the chocolate factory with my niece J and other nephew M for his birthday. recipe: take one happy-times uncle, add two kids, and toss with large bucket of popcorn, matinee movie and dinner at fazoli’s. serve up a good time for all.

continuing with development of automation upgrade at my place of employment. it’s slow going because of coworker vacations and new documentation procedures. it’s going nonetheless.

worried about my brothers J and J. both have their own ongoing ordeals and i’m in a position where i can’t do much to alleviate any of it.

oven’s on the fritz and all i can think of is cakes and bake-to-rise pizzas, even in this crazy heatwave of the midwest. yup, the grass is always greener. . . .

finished only one five-book commitment sheet for the adult reading club. that’s par with last year’s accomplishment, but way under my record of five sheets of a few years ago. i was under-employed that year and had lots of time to spare. not the case this year, but still, only one feels kinda’ like phoning it in.

waist-deep in laundry i need to fold and/or iron and put away. it’s definitely one of my least favorite chores.

there’s more, but that’s all i care to share or can remember right now. maybe i should get one of those franklin-covey things or yuppie p.d.a. doohickeys to keep all of this in line. the steeltrap’s turning into a rusty sieve these days.

nah. i’m too cheap to spring for either. whatever.

tata for now.

love,
lefty.
