Homeward Bound

Posted on Thursday 2 August 2007

After four months of desert living, I’ve cajoled a reprieve from my boss to return home for my family’s reunion. (edit: This was written in late June. Sue me.)

For the last fifteen years or so, my extended family has been getting together at the community park of our collective hometown. So as to include as many as possible, we chose an ancestor three generations back (relative to me) to be the common link. Our family is further extended by church memberships (the same linking ancestor was the founder of the family business ministry), and we get many hangers-on.

Not sure what really did it this year, but the turnout was huge. The register had at least 80 names in it, which doesn’t include children. Maybe we’re seeing the signs of faltering health among those senior among us? Maybe we’re driven to see each other in relatively uncertain times? Not sure. Nevertheless it was fantastic seeing everyone, and we had a great time besides.

I should write more, I wanted to write about how

  • I serendipitously met up with high school pals who just had their third child.
  • got hit on by a woofy, very drunk, but (alas) very married man at a random house party. (scruples won’t let me woo the married)
  • got bounced off my scheduled flight back to the desert because of inclement weather in Dallas, then almost didn’t make it out of Dallas once I got there for the same reason(!)

But vacation time is over; work time is now!
